Animal Adaptations

African Elephant
The African Elephant also known as loxodonta africana
wallows in mud to keep cool. This helps to protect its skin
from the sun and insects.

The ears also keep it cool. The skin behind the ears is very
thin and has many blood vessels, elephants often flap their
ears to aid this process.

The teeth of an elephant are covered with hard ridges of
enamel and are adaptations for grinding plant materials,
hence elephants are referred to as “lophodont”.
